Communication Assistants

These workshops train people to assist people who use augmentative and alternative communication methods to communicate in everyday situations. Participants receive information that include (a) multimodal communication, (b) techniques to find out how a person uses AAC and what he or she wants a communication partner to do during the exchange, (c) the use of questions in a conversation, (d) recognizing and providing opportunities to communicate, (e) pacing an interaction, (f) how to construct messages for people with reduced vocabularies, and (g) strategies to support a person who uses AAC to communicate with a third party in face-to-face, telephone, or written communication contexts.
